Grom invasion 09 Oct 09
Highlight of the week: the mini-groms charging 6 foot bombs in the finals of BL's Blast Off. Low point: the weather.
Pretty yucky conditions for the past week. The sun came out a few times which was nice, but as I sit here writing this it is raining once again. Ew!
BL's Blast Off: Yesterday I watched the final rounds of this epic event at South Palmy. It was out of control. Conditions were wild with the wind howling. The waves were hectic, water was even crashing over the steps at the top of the beach. Total mayhem, yet these kids (some under the age of ten) were charging! Retired WCT surfer Toby Martin and Former World Champion Barton Lynch were comparing it to experienced surfers being out at Sunset in Hawaii. I was stoked to be there watching from the shore. The entire event was all time, with the kids enjoying every second. See all the pics in the snapshow.
Beachley Classic: The final of this WCT event was held at Dee Why Beach last weekend. The winner was Silvana Lima from Brazil, putting in a very solid effort in the final against our own Steph Gilmore. Steph is still currently winning the ratings race this year. Keep up to date with what the best surfing chicks in the world are doing here. See some action from the finals in the snapshow.
Billabong Pro Mundaka: This event has started, but only the first half of round 1 has run so far. That was enough to see Kai Otton cruise through into Round 2 though, yeeew. Keep your eyes on the official website to watch all the action unfold. Just waiting for the swell to pick up, currently it is dead flat.
What the future holds: An interesting write up from the boys at Mesurf.com.au, when they chat with Hayden Cox from Haydenshapes about the future of surfboard design and materials. Check it out. |
There should be waves right through the weekend, so get amongst them. As always you will be sharing them with winds from all over the place, so pick your window carefully.
See you on the beach.
Cheers,
AL
