Sharks. Blueys. Waves 11 Feb 10
This morning local Northern Beaches surfer Paul Welsh was bitten by a shark while teaching his grom to surf at Mona Vale. Paul was driven to the hospital for treatment and is all good.
The rumors are spreading like wildfire, "it was a massive Great White." "There are hundreds of them around here and It was only a matter of time."
Yes it was only a matter of time, thousands of people surf on the Northern Beaches and yes sharks live in the ocean, heaps of them. Sharks are at the top of the food chain out there, they also have teeth and like to bite things. It is just one of those risks associated with surfing. What about the 5 metre Great White that beached itself at Bungan while chasing fish a few weeks ago? Where was the news hype on that one?
The surf has been pretty fun over the past week, with Blue Bottles keeping the crowds regulated nicely. Bluey's and sharks as a team should have numbers right down over the next week.
There have also been some incredible sunrises, sunsets and cloud formations kicking around our parts too. Check the snapshow for all of those colours.
Portrait: This week meet Tim Taplin. When not watching South Park or at Tafe studying Graphic Design, you'll find Tim getting slotted and punching airs at South Narra with his brother Jay and Isaac (Bobby Martinez) Buckley. Tim surfs Matt Penn boards and is stoked on them. Tim's favourite surf trip was to Tavarua / Fiji at the start of this year and he is always frothing to head back down to his local South Coast break when it's firing. I recently spent a week or so with Tim on the North Shore of Hawaii eating plenty of Shave Ice and getting barreled in the Keiki shorey, he said the highlight of his trip was 'me' (which was quite nice of him - cheers mate). Tim is an all round top bloke, he likes covering his skin with products made by O'neill and protecting his eyeballs with Otis sunnies. He also has a 'second' favourite photographer called Zander. If you dropped in on Tim I reckon he would forgive you pretty quickly.
RVCA sale: This is where I point out that's its the last RVCA sale they are doing for a longish time. So if you are into quality threads it would benefit you greatly to hit this sale. The Summer sale store in Brookvale is closing down so the RVCA crew are doing this garage sale to clear all their items and samples (Winter gear too) and there is even a 'name your price' bargain bin. The weekend will cap off with a BBQ and beers too, which all sounds too good to be true! Go here for the finer details.
Flat day fun: Some kids bought themselves a blue tarp and had themselves a good time. Check it. You will like it.
Become a fan: Want to get a little more interaction with the images and photogs from Blue Snapper? Become a fan of the Blue Snapper facebook page, see extra images which aren't on the website, tag your mates, comment on the photos, ask questions about waves and surfers. Sounds pretty great doesn't it! |
Surf is not looking fantastic for the weekend, neither is the weather. Double ouch.
Hope you find a ripple worth paddling for people.
See you on the beach.
Cheers,
AL.
