Quikky Pro 10 Mar 10
Made a last minute decision to jump on a plane and head up to the Gold Coast for the Quikky Pro last Wednesday. What an excellent decision it panned out to be.
Great waves, awesome surfing and as they kept drumming into us the 'BEST' surfers at the 'BEST' event with the 'BEST' commentary, 'BEST' coverage, pretty much the 'BEST' of everything apparently. I'm not sold on their marketing campaign being the 'BEST' but Quikky did a great job putting this gig together. Go check it out next year, flights are cheap and despite popular belief there is an endless supply of accommodation.
The Surfers: Taj, Steph, Dane, Kai and Jordy. That is a list in order of who ripped the most at this event. The five of them were out of control.
- Taj won. He was dominant from start to finish and had the flu. Thats 3 major event wins in a row for Taj. He has won at Bells before can he make it four in a row? We will see in a couple of weeks.
- Steph should probably just go on tour with the guys. Steph won too, in an even more dominant performance than Taj.
- Dane is a freak, his surfing is new and cooler than anyone else out there. He is the 2 or 10 surfer that everyone is stoked to see on the tour.
- Kai Otton was on his backhand and was vertical the whole time. Kai took down local kids Mick and Dingo. Kai lives on the Northern Beaches, which gives him bonus points. Yew.
- Jordy Smith, South African, solid bloke, does airs, surfs with power, his best result to date.
Coolangatta: located on the border of NSW and QLD. The surf clubs serve food and beer. Well that sums that up: Beer; served cold in the surf club overlooking the beach. Queensland: crazy for not having daylight savings, but they serve beer in the surf clubs. Never thought I'd say it, but those Cane Toads currently have the upper hand.
Portrait: This week meet George Ward Senior. George is a 62 year old legend who possesses everything which gives someone that thing we call 'character.' Over the course of the competition up at the Goldy I spoke to George about a range of topics: life, waves, family, Jungle (his band), Indo (his home) and Quiksilver (his sponsor). I missed some of the best waves of the comp while deep in the middle of one of his many stories. George, I wish you and your family all the best, it was an epic experience to meet you mate.
Boost Mobile SurfSho: Starts at Bondi this Friday and runs all weekend. Saturday or Sunday are the days you will see all the big names. Three of those names are Kelly, Mick and Taj. Now I know not many of you would ever want to go to Bondi on a weekend, but this just may be worth it. Looks like there will be some swell too. |
Swell is on the rise people, get ready.
See you out there.
Cheers.
