The 5th annual Blast Off competition kicked off last week with four action packed days of surfing and stoke for 260 grommets. This year they ranged from Under 14's right down to Under 6's. Yep there were 4 year old groms charging 3 foot surf, which was seriously about 2 to 3 times overhead! It was insane! Definitely one of the highlights for me in all my time spent down at the beach shooting.

1988 World Champion - Barton Lynch, along with the help of an amazing team puts the event on each year and is rapidly attracting new sponsors each event.

Blast Off attracts a lot of big name surfers who drop in to hang with the kids, commentate and help judge, such as Layne Beachley, Mitch Crews and Ellis Ericson. Some even have their own children in the competition such as Rabbit Bartholomew and local Tom Carroll.

The event has quickly become Australia’s biggest pre junior surfing competition. Blast Off is a fun-filled school holiday program designed and organised to celebrate the coming of summer and Australia’s rich surfing heritage.

The aim is to introduce young surfers to the world of competition in a friendly and encouraging environment that focuses on surf improvement and family fun.

There's a whole lot of fun peaky little waves out there today and should be waves worth getting wet for over the weekend too. Feels like summer, must be just around the corner.
