Escape 22 Dec 11
The weather and waves lately really make you want to pack the bags and escape. Blue Snapper contributor Ian Bird does just that every now and then, with one of his favourite destinations being the Philippines. This week he gives us a little glimpse of what exactly pulls him back there again and again.
"I have been travelling to the Philippines since 2006 and have travelled extensively up and down the East coast. Although the waves pump at some of the more well-known breaks, there are numerous waves off the beaten track that are world class. Best of all, you can stay at these places for months on end and I can guarantee there will be nobody in the water but you and your crew.
There are over 7,107 islands in the Philippines, but only a handful of them have regular tourists surfing on them.
Rumour has it that surfing in the Philippines began in 1977 when the film ‘Apocalypse Now’ was being made on one of the beaches. The crew left the surfboards behind and the locals began using them.
Often referred to as the Ficklepines - I have heard many people say they have gone on 1-2 week trips there and not scored a decent wave the entire time. The best time of the year to go is between September-November. At this time of year, cyclones funnel down the East Coast and if you watch the charts and know where to go, you will score some of the best waves of your life.
The local people are the friendliest people I have encountered on my travels. They are stoked to see you enjoying their beautiful country – huge frothers. Never did I have a problems with any locals.
One other thing - It’s very cheap!"
